From egg carton to … a bunch of flowers for mom. This is how you do it!

Yum, a nice fresh egg for breakfast or in a salad! Or use them in a farmer's cake or for the mini pancakes. On our farms you may have picked up a nice egg fresh from the chicken and eaten it. At home, most people buy their eggs in the store, packed in a cardboard egg carton. When the eggs are gone, the carton goes in the waste paper. But we think that's a shame! You can make the nicest things with egg cartons. This time Juliëtte makes a caterpillar from an old egg carton.

Make a flower for Mother's Day

On Sunday 8 May it's time: it's Mother's Day! Spoil your little one with a nice breakfast, fresh rolls, an egg and a glass of juice! How nice is it to finish breakfast with a homemade bunch of flowers. Looks great on a tray, on the dining table and the best part is, they stay good forever!

Get started! This is what you need

  • Empty egg carton
  • Scissors
  • Paint – e.g. acrylic paint
  • Brushes
  • Chenille wire
  • Kitchen roll

Craft time! How to make it

  • Check if the egg carton is clean and if there are no feathers in it, for example. Also remove the label from the egg carton.
  • Open the egg carton and turn it over. What we need is a piece of the bottom of the carton.
  • Cut off the lid of the egg carton and then cut the bottom in half lengthwise. You will then get a row of 5 egg compartments.
  • Then carefully cut the 5 egg compartments apart from each other. You will then get 5 separate egg compartments.
  • Now we are going to trim the leaves of the flowers. Cut them apart with the scissors and make the straight cardboard pieces nice and round.
  • To prevent the table you are working on from getting completely covered in paint, it is smart to put a piece of kitchen roll or an old newspaper on the table.
  • Paint the 5 flowers in the colours that you like. If you want an extra beautiful flower, you can paint the inside of the flower a different colour than the outside. Tip: you can use the lid of the egg carton to put the paint in.
  • Let the paint dry well, because we are now going to add stems to the flowers.
  • Choose a nice colour of chenille wire for the stems of the flowers. You can make them all green, but we have now chosen a stem that matches the colour of the flower.
  • Carefully make a hole at the bottom of the flower with scissors. You can ask your mum or dad to help you with this.
  • Now push the chenille wire through the hole. To ‘secure’ it, you can bend the tip of the wire a little.
  • Repeat this for all 5 flowers. Of course, you can also make a very large bunch of even more flowers!
  • Find a nice vase or a water glass and arrange the flowers in it.
  • Done! Now all that remains is to give it to your dear mother (or to your father, grandma or teacher… or just for yourself).

The cows are dancing again! Spring at Hoeve Sonneclaer

Last weekend it happened: the cows of the dairy farm Hoeve Sonneclaer were finally allowed out to the pasture after a long winter in the barn! This annual moment is always a celebration – for the cows and for everyone who comes to watch. Hundreds of people were present at this yearly ‘cow dance.’ The sun was shining, happy children stood by the fences, and the cows themselves? They jumped, bucked, and ran enthusiastically into the pasture. A beautiful sight!

Farmer Kirsten's Blog - The Four Stomachs of a Cow

That farmer Kirsten from FarmCamps De Buitenhoeve knows a lot about making cheese, we already knew that! But a good farmer also knows everything about cows. Because the milk to make those delicious cheeses comes from that beautiful animal. You may have heard that a cow has not one but four stomachs. They are also called ruminants. They stand in the meadow all day long grinding grass. What is the deal with a cow's four stomachs? Why does a cow have four and we only have one? Farmer Kirsten tells you all about it in this blog.
