Farmer Piet and farmer Marije had known each other for years, but the two did not notice each other. However, farmer Marije’s father thought otherwise, seeing in farmer Piet a very suitable partner for his daughter. He chatted a bit with farmer Piet, dropped his name a few times to daughter Marije and a seed was planted. Farmer Marije let herself be persuaded to go for a drink with farmer Piet once and what appeared. The two are completely different, but the spark struck. In fact, there are a few key similarities: they love people, animals, chatting, socialising and, above all, having fun. So a nice colourful couple and before they know it, farmer’s wife Marije is living with farmer Piet on the farm, they have a beautiful daughter Eva and suddenly there are ten luxury glamping tents in this dairy farmer’s yard.
The farm is located in Slappeterp, a small mound village less than 20 minutes’ drive from the Frisian coast, Harlingen and Leeuwarden. With all their cows, a whole lot of sheep and lambs, a good number of ‘wild’ breeding horses, (dwarf) goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, cats, ducks and chickens, it is a colourful mess here. It used to be mainly about the breeding horses here, at the peak there were even 500(!) on and around the farm. Farmer Pete has great stories about that, which you should definitely ask him about. Even today, there is still a large herd of wild Bonte and Friesian horses for breeding. Wonderful to watch!
There is plenty to do on this farm. So you can take a look at the milking pit or help the farmer or farmer’s wife fetch the cows, feed the animals and clean the pens. Prefer brushing something else? Then you’ll be fine with farmer Marije and farmer Piet’s ponies, which need regular brushing and cuddling. If you want to go out for a bit longer with a pony, hire a walking pony and take a nice walk in the area together. Or how about your own care lamb who gets to have a bottle 3 times a day and gets very happy because of your cuddles and petting.
If you do not feel like animals (weird, but possible 😉), you can have fun on the go-karts, in the mud kitchen, on the trampoline or in the sandpit, and if the weather is bad, the kids can play in the stable. And don’t be surprised if the farmer and farmer’s wife also do some pretty crazy things on the farm. So suddenly you are pole-vaulting, building a hut, sliding down a belly-slide in good weather or riding along in a go-kart and tractor ride. It is all possible, as long as there is fun, and believe us, there will be fun at De Bonte Fries.
Surrounded by Frisian nature and tranquillity, FarmCamps De Bonte Fries is located. This farm offers green views for as far as you can see, interspersed with canals flowing through the farmland. If that is not enjoyment…
At De Bonte Fries, you can choose from 6 luxury Barntents to spend your glamping holiday in. The luxury Barn tents include a private bathroom with a bathtub, a large luxury kitchen with a dishwasher and a Hay Hay sleeping loft!
The 6 luxury tents are on a large field, which is partly divided by a canal flowing into the land. The field is fenced with a 1-metre high fence, so you don’t have to worry about safety for the kids.
No farm adventure would be complete without learning a thing or two from the professionals. And farmer Piet and farmer’s wife Marije personally make sure of that. So every day you can help the farmer or farmer’s wife pick up the cows or you can feed the other animals on the farm. There is also plenty of room to go crazy on the farm like building cool huts or pole vaulting.
If the kids are more into playing, the farm is the right place for them! When the weather is nice, they can play in the sandpit and make sand cakes in the mud kitchen. You can also play in the barn in bad weather. Fun guaranteed at De Bonte Fries!
At check-in, children will receive FarmCamps’ Farmers Passport. This contains fun and educational assignments. Your mini-farmers can discover and experience real life on a farm. For each completed task they will receive a stamp in their Farmer’s Passport.
Upon arrival at the farm, you will be given a guided tour so you can explore the farm and learn all about it.
Enjoy an afternoon of creativity! Have fun pimping a real horse’s horseshoe with the farmer’s wife.
Go on an outdoor ride with one of the walking ponies. Together with your parents, you will be given an itinerary and you can have a good time.
At the farm, there are lambs without a mum that you can help raise. If you choose your own care lamb, you can give the lamb the bottle 3 times a day yourself and of course cuddle it a lot.
Join the farmer for a tour on the pony cart. Three children can participate at a time.
Note: this can only be done by appointment, check with the farmer(s) on arrival.
Snuggle up together by the campfire. For the parents, farmer Piet and farmer’s wife Marije will pour a nice Frisian drink and for the kids, there will of course be marshmallows to roast, yummie!
If you are on a dairy farm, you must have seen the milking pit too! The farmer will gladly take you into the milking pit and show you how the cows are milked.
Since not everyone fits in the milking pit at the same time, there is a sign-up list so that everyone gets their turn.
Farmer Marije and farmer Piet enjoy an evening walk through the meadows, over the bridges, past the cows, sheep and wild horses. Add to that a beautiful sunset and great stories from farmer Piet, it couldn’t be better!
The ponies at the farm like to be brushed and cuddled. Something you are only too happy to do!
Fierljeppen, stilt walking, building huts, making a belly slide or a go-kart and tractor parade, nothing is too crazy at this farm!
Looking for ultimate relaxation? A breakfast delivered to your tent, a towel pack waiting for you on arrival or coveralls to prevent your washing machine from working overtime when you get home.
The farm also has a pantry where you can buy some basic foods and treats. And every day, farmer Marije delivers fresh rolls on request. Handy right?
No one likes going home with a bag of dirty washing, Then order the Towel Pack and rent the one and only FarmCamps farmer’s overall for the kids. That way they look just like the farmer and their clothes don’t get so dirty either! Is the smallest one coming along for the ride? Then book the baby package as well, so you don’t have to lug all those baby things around.
You can order all these extras directly during booking. But of course, you can still arrange it on the spot.
A deliciously fresh farmers breakfast delivered to your tent including fresh bread, milk, juice, yoghurt, eggs (you cook these to your own liking) and of course a variety of condiments.
Every morning you can also use the bread service. You can order the bread rolls a day in advance in the farm shop.
PLEASE NOTE: Breakfast in tent and sandwich service are not available in midweek outside school holidays.
No need to lug around your own baby gear! This package includes a baby bed, high chair and a changing mat. Don’t forget to bring your baby’s own bed linen though.
Not only will your mini-farmers look very cool in these red overalls but you’ll be sure their clothes don’t get ruined!
Includes 1 x large and 1 x small, thick white towel. Perfect for leaving washing behind at the end of your holiday!
We know from experience that you are unlikely to leave the farmyard. Just because the kids are having such a great time and are not bored for a minute. And then the parents have a good time too, right?
If you still want to see something of the surrounding area, there are plenty of fun things to do in Friesland. This province is known for its lakes and windmills, but there is much more to see and do such as the Wadden Sea and a real Aqua Zoo!
Did you know that the historic town of Franeker is a 10-minute drive from the farm, and the Boerepaad is within walking distance. So, plenty to do!

Ring-tailed lemurs even roam freely among the visitors.
