Cold weather? Useful tips for the farm

A real Dutch family is not deterred by a bit of cold. But it is nice to be as well prepared as possible for a holiday with the children and to know what to expect. We have some experience with a bit of cold or a fresh wind. Don't worry! Rain or shine, there is always plenty to do on the farm!

We have listed the most important tips for you. Don't ignore these tips and read them before you set off.

Tip 1: Good preparation is half the battle

Bring wellies or old shoes. After all, you are on a real farm. So we cannot completely guarantee that you will remain mud-free. Isn't it nice, with your feet in the clay?

A hot water bottle is also a real must-have. Nice to warm up with your feet together.

Also important: lots of warm, extra, dry socks for in your boots.

Don't forget your favourite, warm pyjamas, onesie or tracksuit. We advise you to just put them on from about five o'clock!

Of course, the glamping tent is already equipped with warm duvets and plaids, but if you are a real cold person or just very attached to your own blanket (we are!), then just bring an extra blanket. You can still fit that in the car, right?

By the way: heating the tent has been thought of. Each tent has a nice gas heater to heat the tent. A few of our tents are also equipped with an air conditioner that can blow nice warm air in addition to cool air.

On our packing checklist you can read many more things that are useful to take with you

Tip 2: Keep moving

Even when the weather is a bit colder, there is always something to do on the farm. The cows simply need to be milked and the animals fed. The farmer can also use your help with sweeping and mucking out the stables, feeding the calves and getting the cows or ponies out of the pasture. But don't forget the go-karts, mud kitchen, trampolines and the climbing tower made of tractor tyres. You will run out of time!

Tip 3 Good food

To stay nice and warm, it is super important to eat well. The farm is an ideal place to eat delicious Dutch food, such as pancakes, made from flour and fresh milk from the farm. Or a delicious hearty stew, with potatoes and vegetables from the land. Or just join in with the farmer's fries evening or pizza evening on the farm!

Tip 4: Making a fire

What is more fun than making a fire? Not in the tent, of course! Many of our tents have an outdoor fireplace next to the tent, where you can make a fire to your heart's content. You can buy logs for the fire from the farmer. Or ask if you can gather wood from the farmer! A nice hot drink, put the children to bed and enjoy.

On the farm, the farmer and his wife also regularly organize a campfire evening. Cozy together around the crackling fire and listen to the farmer's beautiful stories. The kids enjoy roasted marshmallows and you enjoy a glass of wine. Not only is it super cozy to sit around the fire together, it also makes you nice and warm and rosy. You will sleep well!

Tip 5: Cuddling

Of course, the rabbits, goats and all the other sweet animals can't wait for nice cuddles from you. That fluffy, soft fur and all that animal love will of course make you feel warm.

Tip 6: Game night

In a luxury Safari tent, Hay tent, Lodge tent, Farm tent, Ranch tent or Barn tent, everyone has enough space to enjoy themselves. Enjoy reading on a comfortable couch or play games at a large family table. All tents are also equipped with a well-stocked game box.

Tip 7: Fine Weather Guarantee

Are the weather forecasts really so bad that staying at the farm will be a huge challenge? Don't worry! Use our Fine Weather Guarantee and rebook your holiday for free. You can read exactly how this works here.

The cows are dancing again! Spring at Hoeve Sonneclaer

Last weekend it happened: the cows of the dairy farm Hoeve Sonneclaer were finally allowed out to the pasture after a long winter in the barn! This annual moment is always a celebration – for the cows and for everyone who comes to watch. Hundreds of people were present at this yearly ‘cow dance.’ The sun was shining, happy children stood by the fences, and the cows themselves? Farmer Kirsten's Blog - The Four Stomachs of a Cow

That farmer Kirsten from FarmCamps De Buitenhoeve knows a lot about making cheese, we already knew that! But a good farmer also knows everything about cows. Because the milk to make those delicious cheeses comes from that beautiful animal. You may have heard that a cow has not one but four stomachs. They are also called ruminants. They stand in the meadow all day long grinding grass. What is the deal with a cow's four stomachs? Why does a cow have four and we only have one? Farmer Kirsten tells you all about it in this blog.
