Farm life, Italian style

Anyone who loves camping on a farm and the outdoor life will feel right at home in the south of Italy. The region of Puglia is known for its agricultural character, but with a Mediterranean twist. Instead of cows in the fields, you’ll find endless landscapes of olive groves and vineyards. Staying at an agriturismo or a masseria (a historic farmhouse) is the perfect way to experience this rural lifestyle. Children can play freely in nature while you enjoy the peace and space.

Sleeping in a little gnome house

A real highlight for families is a visit to Alberobello. This town looks as if it has come straight out of a fairy tale thanks to the thousands of trulli: white, round houses with cone-shaped roofs. For children, it feels like they’ve stepped into a gnome village. It’s even possible to stay overnight in one of these houses, which makes for an unforgettable experience. The thick walls keep the inside pleasantly cool, even when the Italian sun is blazing outside.

Animals and nature

There’s often plenty to do on Italian farms. You’ll find donkeys, goats and chickens wandering around the yard. Many agriturismos involve their guests in farm life: picking fruit together, watching how cheese is made or helping with the olive harvest in autumn. It’s both educational and fun. Nature parks in the area, such as the Fasano forest, also offer the chance to spot wild animals on a safari.

A pool among the olive trees

Since summers can get very hot, water fun is essential. Most farm accommodations have a beautiful swimming pool, often idyllically located among the olive trees. Children can splash around for hours while parents relax with a good book and a glass of local wine. And if you’d rather head to the beach: the sea is never far away. The beaches often slope gently into the water, making them safe and suitable for young children.

Eating what the land provides

On the farm, you eat what the land has produced that day. It doesn’t get much fresher or more pure than that. Italian nonnas create the most delicious pasta and vegetable dishes with simple ingredients. It’s a wonderful way to introduce children to new flavours. Pizza evenings are also often organised, where children can top their own pizza and watch it disappear into the stone oven.

Glamping in the orchard

Alongside traditional stone houses, you’ll also find more and more glamping options in the south. Luxury safari tents with all modern comforts, while still offering that true camping feeling. You wake up to the sound of crickets and the scent of flowers. It’s the perfect mix of adventure and comfort – ideal for families who love being outdoors but also want a good night’s sleep.

On the farm: how to get your dog used to other animals

Farm life sounds like a dream to many people, and for dogs it truly is one too. There are new scents to discover everywhere, plenty of space to run around, and all kinds of animals roaming about. Still, that first encounter with a cow, horse or chicken doesn’t always go smoothly. Out of sheer excitement or hunting instinct, your dog can get into serious trouble or scare the livestock badly. According to the experts at labradoodleinfo.nl, a calm and controlled introduction is therefore crucial for the safety of all animals on the farm.

Outdoor life with a little extra: farm holidays beyond the border

A farm holiday is all about being outdoors, animals, space and freedom. Children can get messy, discover where food comes from and spend their days playing in nature. That’s exactly why so many families choose a farm holiday close to home, in the Netherlands or just across the border in Germany. But sometimes there’s a desire to combine that farm feeling with a little extra: culture, sunshine and a different setting.

Farm life under the sun (even when you look a little further)

At FarmCamps, we believe in holidays close to home. Staying on a farm in the Netherlands or just across the border in Germany – that’s where it starts for us. But let’s be honest: sometimes you feel the urge to look a little further. And if you do decide to travel abroad, why not do it in a way that is just as pure and child-friendly as the farm holidays you already know?

No headless chickens, just farm life: this is what a family holiday really feels like

Many families know the feeling all too well. A holiday that begins with stress before it even starts. Rushed mornings at the airport, crowds at busy holiday parks and constant stimuli telling you not to miss out on anything. The result is a holiday that costs more energy than it brings.

At FarmCamps things work very differently. No headless chickens, just farm life. And you can take that quite literally. You wake up to the sound of chickens scratching around the yard, not the noise of hundreds of other holidaymakers. Your day begins at your own pace and you feel the calm return instantly. Whether you choose to stay with a farmer or in a luxury tent, FarmCamps is all about relaxing. You do not have to do anything, but you may do everything. Finally a holiday that feels the way a holiday is meant to feel.

FarmCamps starts partnership with Trees for All

At FarmCamps, everything revolves around being outdoors, discovering new things, learning and enjoying farm life. That’s why we’re incredibly proud to become an official Forest Partner of Trees for All from 1 January 2026. Over the next three years, we will plant at least 2,000 trees together, half of them in the Netherlands — creating our very own FarmCamps Forest. How great is that?
