Who doesn’t know the farmer… FarmCamps Breehees

This is Huub and Carolien, together they run the horse farm Breehees. Carolien was born and raised at Breehees, and Huub comes from the village of Goirle. They live on the farm with their daughters, Maud and Suus.

How did you meet?
It’s a funny story. Huub used to be a gardener and worked for a landscaping company in Goirle. The company’s staff party was held at our place. That’s when we first met.

How many animals do you have on the farm?
A lot of horses and ponies, of course! And also:
Quibus, our Jack Russell
Guusje and Dorris, our donkeys
Timon and Pumba, our pigs
Paco and Buritto, our alpacas
Basje the rabbit and a few chickens!

Why did you become farmers?
We think it’s truly the best job there is! Especially the freedom and being outdoors.

What does a typical workday look like?

In the winter:
We start at 7:00 AM by feeding all the horses and animals. After that, they all need to go out to the fields, which takes some time. Then we clean the stables and feed them. Around 1:00 PM, we finish and quickly grab some lunch. Huub then works on the grounds, getting things ready, making, or changing things for the new season. Carolien manages everything behind the scenes. At 5:00 PM, we bring the horses back in and tidy everything up for the next day.

In the summer:
Huub gets out of bed at 6:00 AM to bake bread rolls and prepare breakfasts. Carolien then joins to distribute the rolls and take the breakfasts to the guests. At 9:00 AM, we begin grooming and caring for the horses. Our riding lessons for the campsite guests start at 10:00 AM. At 2:00 PM, we finish and clean the horse stables with the kids, getting dinner ready. There’s usually another activity in the afternoon. We then set up everything on the terrace for the guests coming to eat. At 7:00 PM, we bring the horses in with the kids. We also walk around the farm to order bread rolls. At 11:00 PM, we head inside.

What do you like most about your job and what do you like the least?
Carolien loves working with horses and children—it’s the best thing ever! Every day is different, and the guests are always cheerful. Huub enjoys that he never knows what his day will be like. Huub: “One minute, I’m on the lawnmower, the next, I’m making a boiler, and before I know it, I’m in the kitchen frying a steak. It’s so much fun!” The least fun for both of them is when the kids have to leave, saying goodbye is hard.

Why did you want to become a FarmCamper?
To give guests a glimpse into our life and let them experience the freedom.

What’s the best thing you’ve experienced with FarmCamps guests?
The birth of Bontfire and the help afterward. The birth was very difficult, and the foal was very sick after birth. We received so much help and had such touching conversations with guests. It was truly heartwarming.

Huub and Carolien’s Favorites:

Favorite vacation:
Sunny weather, horses, and having something to do (haha).
Favorite hobbies:
Horseback riding, spending time with horses. Sitting by the campfire with a beer (Huub). Walking with the dog in the woods.
Favorite food:
Huub: Loves everything, as long as it’s a lot (he says, haha). But he really likes our Super Huub Burger.
Carolien: Carpaccio and a nice steak.
Suus: Mega spaghetti fan.
Maud: Fries.
Favorite animal:
Huub: Dog, donkey, chicken (really all animals).
Carolien: Horse.

Summer holiday with a toddler or preschooler in the Netherlands: how to choose a relaxed break at FarmCamps

A summer holiday with a toddler in the Netherlands is very different from travelling with older children. Toddlers need routine, safety and a calm environment. They can become overstimulated quickly and often still need a daytime nap.

Parents searching for a summer holiday with a toddler in the Netherlands are therefore not just looking for a fun destination, but for a child friendly setting where everyone can relax.

At FarmCamps we understand that. Our farms are small scale, safe and designed especially for families with young children. This creates the perfect balance between adventure and comfort.

Luxury camping and the art of the perfect holiday cocktail

At FarmCamps, they understand that modern holidaymakers are looking for an authentic connection with nature without sacrificing comfort. The concept of farm glamping combines agricultural education with high-quality recreation, involving families directly in the daily activities on the farmyard. The experience of cocktailtjes.nl shows that this active form of relaxation supports mental calm and helps bridge the gap between city and countryside. While children learn the basics of livestock farming and play freely around the farm, parents can truly unwind in a lovely setting while enjoying one or more cocktails. Kids happy, you relaxed.

From the busy city to the calm of the countryside

Getting away from the daily hustle and bustle and sinking your wellies deep into the mud – that’s what a farm holiday is all about. While city life keeps you constantly switched on, the countryside encourages you to slow down and enjoy nature. The kids play outside all day, while you take it easy with a cup of coffee in the sun – kids happy, you relaxed.

Adventurous outdoor life for the whole family in Southern Norway

A farm holiday stands for freedom, muddy wellies and learning where our food comes from. For families who love this kind of down-to-earth holiday, a trip to Kristiansand in Norway is a fantastic next step. Here you combine the charm of outdoor living with spectacular scenery. Instead of cows in Dutch fields, you’ll spot moose in vast forests and crabs in the sea. The principle remains the same: nature is the biggest and most beautiful playground there is.

Farm life, Italian style

Anyone who loves camping on a farm and the outdoor life will feel right at home in the south of Italy. The region of Puglia is known for its agricultural character, but with a Mediterranean twist. Instead of cows in the fields, you’ll find endless landscapes of olive groves and vineyards. Staying at an agriturismo or a masseria (a historic farmhouse) is the perfect way to experience this rural lifestyle. Children can play freely in nature while you enjoy the peace, space and tranquillity.

City and countryside combined

A farm holiday stands for freedom, playing in the mud and learning about nature. However, the experience of brugge.nl shows that many families like to combine this rural tranquillity with a cultural day trip. From experience, we know that during a FarmCamps holiday you’ll probably never want to leave the farmyard. But if you’re staying on a farm in the south, a visit to Bruges is literally just around the corner. It’s the perfect way for children to discover not only farm life, but also the rich history of a medieval city.

On the farm: how to get your dog used to other animals

Farm life sounds like a dream to many people, and for dogs it truly is one too. There are new scents to discover everywhere, plenty of space to run around, and all kinds of animals roaming about. Still, that first encounter with a cow, horse or chicken doesn’t always go smoothly. Out of sheer excitement or hunting instinct, your dog can get into serious trouble or scare the livestock badly. According to the experts at labradoodleinfo.nl, a calm and controlled introduction is therefore crucial for the safety of all animals on the farm.
