Everyone knows stroopwafels, spritsen and speculaas for coffee. But do you also know Kruukplaetjes? As a cookie with coffee or tea, as a snack, breakfast or late night snack. We love them! Anyone who has ever been to our farm Op Flakkee may have tasted them. In fact, farmer Annet and farmer Huibert love them and Annet likes to make them with the children at the campsite.
Kruukplaetjes are typical cookies for the South Holland island of Goeree-Overflakkee. They are still often sold at local bakeries and at fairs. The specific origin of the cookies is not entirely clear, but it is said that farmers' wives used to bake them for their farmers who were working in the fields. How appropriate that they are also baked at FarmCamps Op Flakkee. The name Kruukplaetjes probably comes from a combination of a corruption of 'kruud' - herbs and 'plaet' because the cookies were baked on the plate of a stove.
Farmer Annet likes to share her 'secret' recipe with you, so that you can enjoy these super tasty cookies not only on the farm, but also at home!
What you need:
- 500 grams of flour
- 250 grams room temperature butter
- 250 grams caster sugar
- 1 egg - of course an egg fresh from the chicken is best
- Cinnamon powder to taste
- a frying pan or if you go for convenience, a non-stick griddle, for example a gourmet plate.
Here's how to make it:
- Put all the ingredients together in a large bowl and knead a firm dough with your hands. It's quite heavy, so if necessary ask your mom or dad to help a bit.
- Turn the dough into one (or two) thick rolls about 4 cm in diameter.
- Cut the roll into Β½ cm thick slices.
- Fry the cookies in a dry frying pan (no butter!) over low heat until both sides are nicely golden brown.
- Let them cool off, and enjoy!
